Shimano MT40W women's shoe - Tested

shoe

First thoughts:
Looking at the shoe I was pleased to see a women's specific product in a colour other than pink, purple or baby blue, and yes there really have been shoes designed with those colours in the past. Although we hastily add that Shimano have never gone down the girly colour route and the MT40W is a Beige/Brown colour that goes nicely with nature and also most of my wardrobe!

Women specific fit

The shoe has a lower, narrower heel section and a lower volume at the front end of the shoe to accomdate female shaped feet. Even from the begining the heel cup fitted in a snug fashion which minimizes any blistering and maximises comfort. The shoe is a lace up and also has a lengthy strap across the top so there were no problems with my high arch or wandering laces.

Putting them to the test:
The SH-MT40WB is a multi-purpose shoe and has a SPD recessed cleat design so that you can walk in them comfortably with or without cleats. Although they aren't going to work for hiking or miles of walking the sole does give just enough flex to provide a naturalish walking feel. The sole is grippy and has adequate tread for towpaths and rough ground too, as well as being at home in an urban environment.

The soles do however retain plenty of rigidity, ideal for the power transfer to pedals while on the bike with just enough flex for comfort on longer rides.

The light suede did suffer a bit when they got wet and dirty but a good scrub or brush get most mud and muck off. We'd consider some waterproofing spray to keep the wet weather out and maintain the good looks and life of suede-style shoes like these.

The shoe can be used for many purposes, from mountain biking, to indoor spin classes, especially now that most gyms only provide mountain bike specific pedals. So if you want only one pair of shoes that you can use day to day for commuting, training or a spot of mountain biking or touring then test drive these for sure!
