Trek WSD Sonic Helmet

Omnium4_sprint-start

The Sonic helmet is one of two Women Specific Designs from the Trek WSD elite helmet series. It has a number of features to ensure correct fit, comfort, style, aerodynamics and most importantly safety, all designed around a woman's head - which tend to more petite than most blokes heads.

The WSD helmets have been designed to be proportionately smaller than men's helmets and this means shorter in length, width and depth. The helmet sizing comes in two options and is complimented by the 'Ziptite II' fitting technology to hold the helmet fast during riding and more importantly on impact. Structurally the Sonic has a Multi-shell Hard Cote in-mold design with internal reinforcement for added safetly and incorporates the New InVent with QuickFit strap system for a secure fit too.

Comfort is a huge factor with helmets, especially when racing where the last thing you want on your mind is a heavy helmet or a hot head. The helmet has 24 free flow vents that make the helmet weigh in at only 237 grams; 23 grams lighter than the men's Sonic. So with minimised depth providing good vision and a light weight, well ventilated helmet, I was riding with a buoyant, peaceful head; well until another SheCycles staff member cut into a bend ahead of me!

The only down side with the Sonic, and this is purely a personal taste issue, is it's only available in two colour-ways and in my opinion black and pink just don't cut the mustard compared with the striking blue and silver combo. With two size choices and packed full of features you'd be forgiven for expecting a higher price tag on the Sonic. But don't let that scare you away, at only £45 it's a helmet within the reach of most of us, without breaking the bank.

The verdict: Great fitting in all aspects (therefore safe), easy to adjust, comfortable, well ventilated, lightweight, stylish, and a not so scary affordable price!

  • Price: £44.99

  • Colours: blue/silver, black/pink

  • Performance: 9
  • Value: 9
  • Overall: 9

  • Pros: Good price for a mid-high end helmet, lightweight, easy to adjust

In colder weather I normally wear a polar buff which is brilliant but found that in windy conditions, it wasn't enough. I tried wearing a windstopper headband on top but that felt uncomfortable as the headband kept falling down! Has anyone found anything that really works? Has anyone tried the Sealskinz windproof hat? One possible problem is that I have "big hair" which needs to be accommodated! That rules out the men's headwear!
