Road coaching sessions this autumn/winter

Team3
Cornering hard

After the success of the SheCycles.com + Trek WSD road riding coaching session at Hillingdon on 15th October we are proud to announce more dates throughout the autumn and winter months. Coach and supporter of women cyclists, John Leitch, will be coaching at the following sessions, some are women only and others are mixed sex groups, but all are women friendly and aimed at road cyclists who have an eye for beginning racing next spring. These sessions are not the same format as the SheCycles day but do offer a great chance to train and be coached in a group.

Saturday 11th November - Surrey League women's training session supported by SheCycles.com

This coaching session is for women riders only and will be based out of Newchapel, Surrey. It is being organised by the Surrey League who plan on running more women's races next year to encourage new racers to get into the sport. You do not need to be a Surrey League member to attend this session.

The session starts at 12.00 and runs until 3.00pm and costs £4. The venue at Newchapel which offers us changing facilities in a village hall and a quiet three-mile circuit on quiet and flat roads in the Surrey countryside.

The programme includes:

  • riding in a bunch, getting used to being close to other handlebars
  • riding at the front
  • riding in a line
  • following another rider's wheel
  • exercises for riders with racing experience
  • attacking before a corner
  • riding alone
  • riding as a pair
  • attacking out of a corner
  • riding alone with a marker to follow
  • leading a team-mate into corner for that rider to attack

Power Pack and Starter Pack sessions - Nov 5th and 19th

Two sessions for starters and novice races are being organised by the Surrey League at Brockham, near Dorking in Surrey on Sunday 5th and 19th November 2006. These coaching sessions will be lead by John Leitch and aim to give riders the confidence and knowledge to get you to the start line of your first race and see you over the finish line too.

The sessions start at 12.00 and run until 3.00pm and cost £4 per rider.

The sessions are designed for men and women riders but don't be intimidated by that, John will make you at home and have you riding along in a pack in no time at all. Using a smallish circuit means we are never too far from base, and there are stops to regroup, recover and evaluate progress.

The aim of the sessions are:

  • to ride and talk…..
  • to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses
  • to help you spell out your goals
  • to listen to the goals of others
  • to plan your training for the coming week
  • to plan your training for the coming month
  • to meet others at the same “raw” stage of racing/race-preparation as you
  • to help you recognise that you are not the only one worrying about the same things
  • to relax and make friends
  • to feel part of a like-minded community

    John Leitch says

Surrey League thrives on having a steady flow of new riders. We want you all to feel welcome and to have somewhere to turn for answers. There is something of a strange contradiction in cycle racing in that while everyone is trying their level best (during the race itself) to beat the rest, the sport contains many people who are more than happy to share experiences and offer useful advice.

A coach can help at this early stage by listening to/giving a steer on your proposed winter training schedule while (later on) lending an ear to your plans for the next racing season. This is an open house. So feel free to come along. There are no boundary lines, no need to switch clubs. Just a pooling of new riders still slightly nervous…. but also excited at what their body might be capable of when prepared properly and then put under racing stress… and those who want to move up the ranks next summer.

"Remember, most of us race for the joy of competition, for a feeling of satisfaction and fulfilment." ….that's not a quote from me but from a psychologist. However, it's where I'm coming from, so if you buy into that concept too, we should get along fine.

Ive been putting in the base miles lately doing about 200 miles a week on the road. Im really enjoying it. However my speed on the flat is about 17 miles and hour and it drops up hill to about 12 miles an hour - how can I improve on this - any tips - I have tried raising my cadence which has helped - any tips for the hills?
