Newcomers to Newport Velodrome had the chance to ride with some top British riders last Sunday at a training session organised by the Sussex Cycle Racing League (SCRL).
Sessions like these offer beginners the chance to have a go at mastering the range of skills involved with track racing. They also allow more experienced riders to build on their fitness and racing technique.
Novices had the chance to familiarise themselves with the track and as the day went on there was some fast paced action, with the likes of Nicole Cooke and new talent Alex Dowsett heating up the competition.
After returning from her impressive performance at the UCI World Championships in Madrid last month, Nicole Cooke joined the session and certainly gave the men a run for their money!
Riders could choose to compete with either a fast paced 'A' group or take it easy with the slightly less daunting 'B' group. This kind of session allows riders to gain confidence on the track and you don't even have to own a track bike, you can hire one on the day.
A number of talented young riders, including Interbikes' Sophie Terry and Evans Cycles' Gabriella Coates, were at the session in preparation for the up coming Revolution series at Manchester Velodrome. And others just fancied a bit of fun.
This session was organised by the SCRL but there are a number of drop in sessions held at the track which are open to all. Alternatively, to let loose on the boards you can get involved with the track league meetings held at Newport. For more information visit, www.bcf.uk.com or call the Velodrome on: 01633 671 814.
