Specialized Riata mountain bike shoe tested

riata
Nice stitching!

Specialized have a number of mtb shoes aimed at the women's market, the Riata is a mid-range and lightweight sports shoe (670g for a pair size 39) perfect for summer riding.

They have been designed specifically for women with narrower and deeper heel cups, lower volume toe box and good supportive arch padding, as women's feet are very different to men's. Under the Specialized Body Geometry system, it is possible to change the footbed of their shoes so you can choose the most appropriate insole for your foot's shape. This increases comfort and efficiency, which will have a positive impact on your knees as well as improved pedalling action. Three types of footbed are available to suit flat feet through to high arches, and those who pronate or supinate. Visit the Specialized websitefor a closer look at the options available from Specialized dealers.

The shoes' outers are suede with breathable mesh sections which is good for ventilation but means that they are not waterproof in heavy rain conditions. There are three Velcro straps for a contoured and secure fit, with unlimited degree of custom adjustment that's easy to adjust on the move. The sole is pretty stiff and unless you're a racer or want to invest substantially more cash for a carbon sole, the Riata sole is plenty stiff enough for most riders including experts. Finally, the sole has a 2-bolt SPD-style cleat pattern, compatible with all major MTB pedals.

I have just bought a new pair of cycling shoes and forgot how annoying / fiddly setting up the cleats is. Anyone got any suggestions to ease the pain in my knees and save about 2hrs every ride moving them 1mm at a time in every direction (Argh!). Any help would be appreciated. CJ
