UCI World MTB Champs: Junior Women XC

Unfamiliar countries at the top of the results sheets is becoming a theme of the 2006 MTB and Trials World Championships in Rotorua, New Zealand. The Junior Women XC race saw the first rainbow jersey ever awarded to a Slovenian rider, with 17 year old Tanja Zakelj standing atop the podium.

She had to work for it, though. French rider Julie Krasniak made the early running, but Zakelj passed her on a rocky descent on lap two. Krasniak battled all the way to the finish, but Zakelj held on to her lead, finishing just 23 seconds clear of her French rival.

Another solid British ride in the Junior race, with Amy Thompson coming in 8th, just over five minutes down.

Have you ever wanted to take part in a race but have been put off by sharing the course with too many experienced riders?

Gorrick do a fantastic job of organising many events in the South and are keen to encourage more ladies to take part.

For their next two events which take place on 8th October at Mytchett (near Camberley, Surrey) and 12th November at Crowthorne (Berkshire), there will be a new category. For first time lady racers, they will be able to join in the Beginners Category which will consist of one lap (approx. 4-5 miles). The other racers in this category will be the under 12's, juveniles (aged 12-14) and youth (aged 15-16).
