Facing the off-season
This is currently what I am doing as I type this. For most professionals this is a time of relaxation and, generally doing nothing. Personally I will strive to do this and have a camping holiday to the Isle of Skye planned for mid October. However, I have to use the time wisely to earn some money to help fund what maybe another year in Belgium with a pro team next year.
So what exactly will I do with the off-season?
Firstly I will take time off the bike COMPLETELY. During this time I will probably take to a swimming pool a couple of times a week and enjoy a few walks in the hills. I see this period as a time to do the physical things that I really enjoy but can't do in the season.
The remainder of my time will be spent painting, drawing and probably doing some part time work.
Obviously preparations will be made for the Winter and next season. Plans to go abroad over Winter must be made; accommodation secured, travel plans put in place and a Winter bike built up. I must also look at my Winter training program; not so much the content but how key sessions will help to address what have been my weaknesses this year. This I believe is some that all riders should do.
I will look at all the positive achievements this year; for me 8 top 5's exceeded my expectations. While looking at this I will analyze how these results could have been better. Often it's a case of tactics, but also it may have been lack of certain physical strength at a particular moment. There is ALWAYS room for improvement.
So if you are a 'roadie' like me, enjoy your off season. If not, enjoy the throat stinging, high intensity efforts associated with cyclo-cross in what I'm sure will be a mild Winter!!!!! Well, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!
