Folding bikes come of age

Folding bikes have become common place in our towns and cities now and make the lives of commuters all over the country more bearable everyday. The technology aof these bikes has improved in leaps and bounds over the last few years and dare I say it, they are even trendy now. You can spend up to £2000 on a top line rig that folds up neatly into a bag whilst you hop on and off buses, trains and the Tube.

The 25th Anniverary Dahon Mu XXV

In 1983, Dahon introduced the very first Dahon Folder. Twenty-five years and 3 million bicycles later, Dahon celebrates a quarter century of championing the cause of green mobility. In commemoration, Dahon has created the Mu XXV, a Limited Edition bicycle that represents the state of the art in folding bicycle technology. A Puro M7 magnesium frame takes center stage and is dressed in custom 25th Anniversary components from FSA, Shimano, Syntace, Schwalbe, Kinetix and Kore. A total of two hundred fifty individually numbered Mu XXV's will be hand-made.

The Mu XXV will be available in select bike shops worldwide in January 2008, so get your order in now if you fancy one...go on sell your car! heck out these features:

  • Puro M7 magnesium is a proprietary new magnesium alloy that has the corrosion resistance properties of aluminum
  • Frame is treated with a special coating that adds additional corrosion resistance, before painting
  • Puro M7 magnesium is 30% lighter than aluminium
  • 25 th Anniversary Edition FSA K-Force Light crankset with ceramic bearings
  • The Puro M7 magnesium frame is as light as carbon with none of the drawbacks
  • The lightest folding bike on the market
  • One of only 250 bikes in existence
  • Folded size: 36 x 64 x 81 cm (14” x 25” x 32”)
  • Weight: 7.55 kg (16.61 lbs)
  • Price: 2.500 Euro

I do a 70 mile round-trip commute everyday by train. In March I bought a Ridgeback Cyclone urban "mountain" bike with the intention of riding in the morning to the next station along the line (3 miles) or next one again (7 miles) to squeeze a bit of extra fitness out of my body. Trouble is I'm not actually enjoying doing this so rarely bother. What I have found I enjoy though is the whole 35 miles home by bike. The bike I have though is just not right for it, I feel really squished up and want to be able to change riding position and it's not as fast as I'd like.

Should I bite the bullet and go for an all out road bike, drop bars don't worry me, or should I go with the strong desire I have to own a cyclocross bike (the Kona Jake keeps ...
