Fi and Meg head for TransRockies

Fi Spotswood

Just before Fi Spotswood heads off to the TransRockies we got to chat about who she's riding with in the women's category and how they got together to attempt the crazy mountain epic.

Meg (Bichard) and I met at the TransWales in 2006. We were both racing as mixed pairs and she and her partner Max won the category and Gary and I came third. We realised we were both from Bristol so have trained together since.

Meg is a vet student and I am a PhD student so can occasionally afford training rides in the day time (but also it means that money is a tad tight!) We are both keen to make the most of every second of sunshine…

Fi says "Meg is a demon on the bike - has superb strength, endurance and also unsurpassable technical ability. She has numerous accolades under her belt including the National Student and Welsh XC Champs , several enduro podium performances and a gazillion xc race podiums. She is quite a partner and I am honoured (if a little frightened), to be her partner in such an epic race as the TransRockies! I am keen to embrace the challenge and have been practicing those hills!"

We have similar philosophies of riding. We are happy to train hard because the results are well worth it. We also like riding in exotic and interesting places with beautiful terrain and with friends. Meg has recently been sponsored by Extreme Endurance, and I am sponsored by Minx-girl.com. I have been riding for just over a year and come from a background of triathlon and then adventure racing. I know I have a lot to learn and am frequently humbled by the ability and fitness of the female mountain bikers in the UK. I just hope my bloody-mindedness, high pain threshold and ability to laugh at myself will get me through the Trans Rockies.

So bring it on and let the fun start here…
