Pearl Izumi AmFib Tight tested in the rain

Pearl Izumi AmFib
Toasty tights

When it's cold out there you have to make sure your legs stay warm, no good letting those powerful muscles get cold due to wind chill. The AmFib tights address this problem by placing windproof and water resistant fabric panels on the front of the leg, right where wind chill hits. With plenty of panels, that's 10 actually, including articulated knees for a good fit and plenty of comfort whilst pedalling. The rear central panel that covers your bum is also wind and water repellent, so there's no need to suffer from rear wheel water spray anymore.

There is no padded insert built into the AmFib tights, the crotch area has an elastic gusset to accommodate a short liner or short of your choice, the elastic panel gives an extra degree of freedom of movement right where it's needed.

So how weatherproof is water resistant? Well it'll survive a light downpour and easily hold out showers, but heavy and prolonged rain will get through to the skin. The windproof fabric is exactly what the description says, it stops wind from hitting your skin and even when you get wet your legs will stay warm. We tested the AmFib tights on a cold and very wet (more like a constant downpour) day and although the foul weather did get through the water resistant panels the major muscles did not get cold or become impaired. They sure beat wearing a pair of waterproof overtrousers, any excess heat is lost through the thinner fabric on the back of the legs. Internally all the panels have a fleeced finish which adds a thermal element and wicks sweat quickly away from the skin, the seams are flatlock stitched for comfort.

Pearl Izumi's elastic ankles keep everything neatly in place and the 8” ankle zippers make getting them on and off a bit easier. The waistband is softly elasticated with a drawstring for a custom fit, there's also a neat little pocket for keys and cash stitched to the inside of the waistband.
