Gore Xenon Women's jacket : TESTED

Gore_xenon_women
Loads of reflective bits!

The Gore Xenon is super lightweight with a WINDSTOPPER® light laminate shell to keep out the wind and cold draughts. The jacket is designed for high performance use and competitive cycling, the breathability is fantastic, just what racers and serious cycle training requires. Fit is specific for biking with ergonomic design that allows for a sleek and aerodynamic fit, the arms are pre-bent and so is the back plus the front is cut slightly higher than normal for a perfect fit when riding.

When we said lightweight, we should point out that a size 38 weighs 181g, that's less than a banana, and it packs down to a hand sized ball so you can stow it easily in a jersey pocket. Unlike some cheaper wind shells the arms of the Xenon have mesh lining, this allows comfortable use when work directly over a short sleeved jersey. Worn over a base layer it's windproof enough for cold dry weather riding in the winter and it will withstand a heavy shower too. The water-repellent finish sheds water fast and effectively so if you need to stay dry and warm in an emergency you won't be disappointed. The cuffs have elastic and Velcro adjustment and the collar is high without being annoying or interferring with your helmet.

For such a lightweight jacket we were surprised by the Xenon's durability, the seams are perfectly stitched and there's even a storm flap behind the zipper too. The final feature we loved is the amount of reflective striping down the arms, sides and rear, even down to the bum flap. Remarkable that such a lightweight and packable jacket has such features without compromise.

Verdict

When a jacket fits and feels this good you know you're on to a winner. The fabric and build quality is top notch and the investment will pay off with years of use and happy riding.
