Women cyclists in London - new figures

share-the_road_sign1

We spotted this article on the CTC website written by Matt Seaton on Thursday March 22, 2007 for The Guardian newspaper. You can check out the full report by Matt at www.guardian.co.uk, in the meantime here's an exerpt with some scary figures for female cyclists in the Uk's capitol.

Two wheels

Here is a startling fact to get your attention: between 1999 and 2004 (the period for which figures are available), 85% of female cyclist fatalities in London involved a heavy goods vehicle.

To put this into context, the number of cyclists killed in the capital has been fairly constant for several years, running at about 20 per annum - this figure on streets where, Monday to Friday, about half a million people take to their bikes every day. That perspective is necessary, because this is not a story about how dangerous cycling is. It is a story about the particular problem cyclists have with HGVs, and what we can do about it.
