Dr Kim and the SheCycles Clinic

The 'SheCycles Clinic' is a dedicated section on SheCycles.com Forum to give all SheCycles members the opportunity to ask our resident Doctor and Pro-Elite mountain bike racer Kim Hurst, any health, fitness and nutrition questions related to cycling.

You can post your questions on the 'Clinic' section of the Forum or e-mail more personal questions to editor@shecycles.com, Dr Kim wil be also be doing a round up of the most common, and some more unusual issues that arise. Look out for her regular Clinic articles on the Homepage.

More about Dr KIm

Kim started out her XC mountain bike racing career as a junior and racked up a number of wins including National Junior MTB XC Champion and National Series winner from 1995-97 and represented Team GB in 5 European and World Junior Championship events, including DH and XC. She returned to competitive riding in 2005 and last year won the TransWales multi-stage endurance event as part of the SheCycles.com pairing with Heather Dawe and picked up the bronze medal in the British XC Championships, so Kim knows a thing or two about what it takes to race at a high level. Now, aged 28, Kim will be looking to develop her skills across disciplines and will be venturing onto the tarmac as well as racing on the dirt in 2007.

On a professional note, Kim graduated as a Medical Doctor (MBChB) in 2002 and works as a General Practitioner for the Royal Air Force. This has allowed her to gain clinical experience in Sports Medicine, Training Injuries and Rehabilitation as well as practical experience in Mountain Search and Rescue Medicine.

So fire away all with those nagging questions and know you'll get a straight forward and professional answer to help you get the most out of your riding and training.

i recently tried changing from flatties to spd's and have experienced a great deal of knee pain in my right knee. i already have cartilage degeneration in this knee and am assuming that the knee position is aggravating this. Have tried altering the angle of the cleats etc and pain is still there although not so excruciating.

Has anyone else with knee problems experienced this. I don't want to exacerbate already existing problems. Should I persevere, hoping my knee will 'adjust' or change back to flatties? Anyone?
