Singlespeed World Champs

Exciting news for anyone with a penchant for riding mountain bikes of the one-geared persuasion. Not only will the UK (and, more specifically, Scotland) be hosting the UCI "geared bike" World Championships, but we'll also have the as-official-as-these-things-get Single Speed World Championships on these shores. Or, more specifically, the shores of Scotland, again. More specifically than that, SSWC 2007 will take place around Aviemore, Scotland on 1/2 September. The race itself will be on the Sunday, but the organisers say, "Get there on the Saturday for registration and a wee dram."

And that's about all they say at the moment. We imagine that there's more to come at some point - keep an eye on www.sswc2007.com for any further details that may be forthcoming.

Needless to say, there'll also be a Single Speed UK Championships. And that won't be in Scotland. Instead it'll take place on 8-10 June at Ashton Court Estate, Bristol, in association with the Bristol Bike Fest. There's a mailing list running for updates - sign up at the suitably minimalist www.ssuk07.com.

Hi Everyone - I am after your opinion on single speeding. I am seriously considering buying a single speed and I can't quite work out if it is a good idea or slightly crazy! I am after a bike for winter so that I don't trash my stumpjumper riding around the Peaks all winter. I like the simplicity of single speeding - not so much to go wrong or clean! I also like the idea of the physical challenge but am not sure if my legs could cope with it!!

So what is your opinion - are there any single speed nutters out there? Is it fun?

Oh and I guess - any opinions on good bikes/ frames?
