Evans Cycles have announced a landmark deal with The Metropolitan Police Service
in a bid to get the Great British Bobby back on their bikes. Except this time
around, rather than taking them on their crime fighting duties, as in the days
of Dixon of Dock Green, its a bid to cut down carbon emissions and save
the environment by encouraging both officers and staff to cycle to and from
work.
From February 2007, 40,000 Metropolitan Police workers are now going to be entitled
to a tax break and up to 50% off the price of a new bike all thanks to the Ride2Work
programme developed by Evans Cycles; a government backed scheme which takes
advantage of the Green Transport Plan.
Martin Tiplady, Director of Human Resources, said: "This partnership with
Evans Cycles gives our staff the chance to lease a bicycle at low cost and make
the most of the many benefits it brings. It demonstrates our commitment to environmental
issues by offering facilities that help to ease congestion and reduce the emission
of greenhouse gases."
The Metropolitan Police workers join 773 other organisations already taking
advantage of Evans Cycles Ride2Work, which include the Volkswagen Group,
Farrer & Co and McGraw-Hill.
Mike Rice, Evans Cycles, MD, said: "Im thrilled the Met are taking
the lead. The Ride2Work programme has been successful in getting some big organisations
to think more about green issues and how to tackle them."
