 RACE REPORTS 22 / 01 / 07

World Cup Podium for Wyman

Helen in her UK champs jersey
Global Racing Team/Bio-Racer rider Helen Wyman stood on the World Cup podium for the 2nd time this season.

Helen took control of the final round of the World Cup in the early laps yesterday in Hoogerheide and managed to gain 3rd place.

The fast road start in bright conditions saw the riders going through the town centre before hitting the first off road section. Helen was 3rd into the first set of corners and waited for her chance to take the lead until the second half of the lap. The group at that point was 6 strong, and included Katie Compton, the US Champion who was racing in Europe for the first time.

Once Helen hit the front, she set about reducing the size of the lead group and within half a lap there were only 3 riders left.

These three, familiar to the front of World Cup races (Hanka kupfernagel, Marianne Vos, and Helen) settled for a lap before the attacking started.

Unfortunately for Helen she made an error on a small decent and hit the course marking and fell. This meant the remainder of the race was a chase for Helen to see if she could bridge the small gap to the front, whist ensuring she stayed ahead of Maryline Salvetat of France who was charging through the following riders.

After her bike change, Helen road very strongly to the line in the heavy rain which had set in and managed to secure her 3rd place, behind winner Hanka, and Vos in 2nd. It was a solid ride only 7 days before the World Championships and show that’s Helen’s coming to form just at the right time.

Behind Helen, Global Racing Team Rider Gabby Day was battling in a large group and managed to gain 23rd place. Having secured the UK National series last week, Gabby is in confident mood and hope to be well in the top 20 come the muddy Worlds course.

Just looking into getting some insurance on my bike, as would be gutted if its get nicked. Can anyone recommend an insurance company before I go trawling round. The only one so far I've tried is e&I and they quoted £129 for the year (£1500 bike). Is that about right?
