Protective Barrow jacket: TESTED

Protective
Gilet style - Click to see with sleeves!

At this time of year it really is all about practical and visible clothing. We're always looking for outer layers which will protect us from the elements when out on the trails or road and that won't let us fade into the background whilst commuting. And above all we want versatility.

By now you're probably thinking of something along the lines of a luminous yellow number? OK, so you can't beat a reflective, bright yellow commuting jacket for pure safety but sometimes you want something a bit more stylish. Over the past few months we've been wearing the Women's Specific, Protective Barrow jacket. In bright Atollo blue this certainly will provide a great alternative to black and not only does the colour stand out but we think it looks rather stunning too!

What's great about this jacket is that it really is a great all year rounder. It works as a great outer layer when you're worried about getting caught out in showers and keeps you toasty when worn over base layers. For warmer weather the sleeves zip off providing you with a light-weight gilet. When you want to zip the arms off, there are two very handy rear pockets for stuffing the sleeves into. The micro-polyester fabric makes for a windproof, incredibly comfortable and along with the removable sleeves, a very practical design. The cuffs, neck and hem are elasticated further adding comfort and practicality.

Verdict

We have come to expect high standards from the Protective range, produced by the Edinburgh Bicycle Group. Their designs come up trumps every time, proving that they really do know what us women need when we're out riding. The designs manage to look great without compromising the performance. The jacket sits at a really nice length at the back and thanks to the elastic hem, doesn't ride up when you're in motion. It's tapered nicely for a women's specific fit which means comfort on the bike and a great look in the pub!

Another superb product from the range which we'll be wearing come rain or shine!

good Great colour, protects you from the wind and rain and is very versatile.

bad If you're of a very petite frame the sleeves may come up slightly long.

Hi folks, has anyone got a Gill Ventilator jacket? After getting soaked to the skin quite a few times recently, and reporrofing my old Race Face Aquanot, the time has come for a new waterproof jacket.

The Gill ventilator seems to be 100% waterproof, breathable, windproof and everything you want it to be, but only costs £35. Has anybody got one? Is it really that good?

I've been playing with the outdoors for years so I know all about 2 layer and 3 layer fabircs, and tapedseams etc, but I'd be really interested to know if anyone has any practical experience of owning and using one? All the shops' websites seem to love it, I'm just suspious of something so cheap!
