Specialized Instinct helmet - TESTED

specialized_instinct_helmet

Not everyone wants a race inspired helmet designed for speed and aerodynamics, some riders, ourselves included are more interested in riding hard on technical trails and want a bit more protection for the inevitable offs.

Like the Giro Zen helmet the Specialized Instinct offers greater coverage around the temples and back of the head yet doesn't compromise on venting or weight. The Instinct is a mountain-inspired helmet designed with large vents and huge exhaust ports at the rear to draw air through the helmet even at low speeds.

A comfortable and highly secure fit is thanks to the new rear vertical adjustable PRO Fit 2 retention system keeps helmet secure, and is easy to adjust on-the-fly. It cups the rear of your head for a stable fit that won't move when you need it most. Sizing is good, with three options to suit all head shapes and sizes, none of that 'one size fits all' here.

The deeper profile inspires confidence for those moments of inpact and the large visor deals with everything from low sun, mud splats and rain, it's the ideal helmet for mountain adventures, fast singletrack riding and even slow technical climb situations.

Verdict:

  • Price: £49.99
  • Colours: Matte Black, Blue, White, Grey
  • Sizes: Small (51-57cm), Medium (54-60cm), Large (57-63cm)
  • Performance: 8
  • Value: 8
  • Protection oriented mountain bike helmet without compromise on venting or weight

I'm trying to buy some body armour for Christmas for a friend who's about 5 ft 8 and about a size 8. She's tried bits and pieces of men's but it's all a bit on the big side.

Any ideas for what would work best?

Thanks!!
