We managed to hijack the Trek Madone 5.0 WSD at one of Trek's demo sessions and we liked it so much we are desperate to get one on long term test so we can tell you all about it.
But for now we can share a few juicy facts and our thoughts based on a few laps of Hillingdon circuit - a few smooth and very fast laps that is!
The Madone is Trek's top end WSD road race bike and is ready to stand proudly on the start line of any domestic race. The Madone range is different in geometry to the Pilot range with the Madone having a traditional frame design instead of compact frame geometry. The ride is more racey and slightly more aggressive than the Pilot frames offer, although the setup can provide a very comfortable ride for long distances too. Thanks to the OCLV 120 GSM round tubes the road vibration is damped right out and the bike feels lively and complient in all the situations we experienced, and we weren't ahngin around!
On the race track the bike glided smoothly and responded well to a kick of the pedals, exactly what a race bike should do. We also found the steering and cornering to be direct, fast and highly accurate, perfect for those swift manoeuvres. The bike is specced with all the usual Trek WSD components including shorter cranks, narrowed handlebars and easy to reach brakes, and not forgetting a Bontrager Fit Select CRZ+ saddle. Sizing is good for women riders too, especially great for smaller women who previously may have been left out when it came to the high end road bikes. The Madone 5.0 WSD is available in sizes down to 47cm.
