 RACE REPORTS 12 / 11 / 07

Global feature at World Cup Cross

Global Racing Team had a very successful trip to the 2nd round of the women’s cyclo-cross world cup in Pijnaker, Holland. Having fully recovered from a heavy crash the weekend before, Gabby Day lined up with Helen Wyman for the familiar race that had been seriously affected by recent bad weather.

From the start, world number 1, US rider Katie Compton, powered away from the line, followed briefly by Helen Wyman until a mechanical problem forced Helen to run to the first pit. Effectively starting the race 30 seconds behind the last rider, it looked like a bad day for Wyman.

Teammate Gabby however had no such problems and surged into the top 10 from her 3rd row gridding and set about pursuing the leading riders. Up front, Katie was in a commanding position and never looked challenged on the muddy course. The big question behind her was if Daphny could hold onto 2nd with several riders chasing her down.

Helen, having changed her bike was back into her rhythm and set about cutting through the pack to get back to the top 10. At the end of lap 3 she had reached 11th and never gave up her pursuit and finished a fantastic 6th place.

Gabby Day continued to battle and ride with true class to finish 9th, only just beaten into 8th by 17 year old Belgian sensation Sanne Cant. Following her top 10 place at the recent Koppenberg Cross, Gabby showed she is a real contender for a top 10 place at the World Championships and will be looking to put pressure on Helen in the National Championships in January.

Katie Compton meanwhile took the win after a dominant performance, and will continue to lead the world ranking from Daphny van den Brand.

The Global Racing riders are now preparing for the next round of the Women’s World Cup in Koksijde, Belgium where they will be hoping to continue their good form.
