Helly Hansen Flex V-neck - tested

Base layers are a must for the colder weather we have been experiencing and certainly for the forth coming winter. Helly Hansen provide a great range of base layers to offer, SheCycles tested the Flex V-neck. Helly Hansen have been in the business for thirty years and their textiles technologies are advanced in the realm of high spec fabrics.

The Flex V-neck baselayer is of the HH Dry™ family with Lifa® Stay Dry Technology™. With the aim of keeping you dry during high intensity activities the fabric is designed to promote transport of sweat from the body to the next layer.

We tested the white size medium (size 12) and found that fabric did live up to its expectations of high quality. We found that it did keep us dry during medium level exercise and with a secondary moisture wicking garment on top of it. We also found, however, that it got extremely wet during high exertion and when a fleece was used as a second layer, rather than a second moisture wicking top.

The pink and white are great colours together, and the overall look, shape and feel are excellent. The placement of the pink panels are very flattening, bringing in the waistline. The flat lock feature stitching, especially the pink on white, looks great and is very flattering as it accentuates the feminine cut of the garment. The quality of the garment as a whole is second to none.

The feminine cut of the garment is good. However, the arms are tight and long. The fabric does not allow for much stretch, even with the Flex Zone™ reverse panel engineering, there is not much give. The arms do stretch in length rather than with, an aspect we are not sure the reasoning behind. A feature that suits cyclists is the lower curved back, perfect for the bent over position to prevent back exposure.

White never likes a 40degree wash, even though the washing instructions bid 40 as best, keep it to 30. And make sure you use non biological washing powder on all of your base layer garments to prevent clogging the wicking ability.

Verdict

A good looking overall well fitting base layer. We recommend the Black/Aquarius for washing hazards.
