I have been becoming less and less motivated at my gym no matter what I do, classes, CV work, weights...and so am considering packing it in. However I don't want to end up saggy and unfit like I was 18 months ago, is it enough just to mtb at weekends??? I do walk a lot to and from railway stations and home/work in the week (about 4-5km per day), but like a lot of people if I don't enjoy something, I won't do it, or I'll do it half assed if I make myself go which is just as bad! Plus I really lack motivation once the colder/darker nights get here.... What do you think?? Grit my teeth and keep going or rely on the bike...?

 I try and do a mixture of stuff because I found biking just does not work everything. I do -tedium itself-Body Pump once a week and the odd Spinn class in winter. I also show my face on occasion at the local running club. Just me but I find biking is not enough and I also have a constant battle to control my weight.

Yeah I've done body pump a bit. Not the most stimulating! My gym has had a revamp of its class timetable and now there are very few classes that suit me time wise - they are either all finished by 7 (I don't get home until almost 6.30) or at the weekend when I'd rather be out on my bike. Had a few sessions with a PT which were more enjoyable but as I don't earn very much I just can't justify the cost!

 turbo trainer at home?

 I am thinking of buying a turbo trainer - I really like the idea of getting some exercise in on those wet, cold and dark nights when I really can't be bothered to go out on my bike. Anyone any suggestions about which one to buy?

 I gave up the gym years ago and still can't bring myself to set foot in one. Riding just at weekends wouldn't be enough for me. When I gave up the gym I was cycle commuting about 3 or 4 days a week and MTBing at the weekend. I still cycle commute but not as often so I try to run a few times a week as its more time efficient. I also do a bit of dangling about on the indoor climbing wall for upper body work. Not been climbing for a while though, can't face being stuck inside! I joined a running club for the cold dark nights, more motivating with company. I also have a good group of friends to go night riding with which helps too. I do miss the gym's jacuzzi and steam room though!

 I gave up my gym membership when I started commuting by bike, I just enjoyed it more. Wouldn't go back now, I find getting out in the evenings in the winter a lot easier when its my method of getting home.

 I've just done the same too fed up of the 6 month refurb at the gym we are shoved in a hall at the mo, much prefer my new commuter bike!!

 I bought some running shoes and gave up the gym a couple of years ago. I had never run in my life, but liked the idea, and flexibility - any time, any place, no bike to clean, no plans to make. To start with I worked on a 5 k walk/run training schedule from www.runnersworld.com. Did a 10k after about 3 months, and continued to run 5-10K a few times a week (takes me between 30-80 mins) I run (well ran, I am 38 week pregnant at the moment) on lit pavements after dark in the winter, bridleways and footpaths during daylight and at work at lunchtimes in the winter to make the most of the daylight. Iural r wouldn't say I was a natural runner at all, but it is so convinient that I do do a few times a week, and bearable with an iPod. Made a huge difference to my riding fitness too. Oh, and I'd just got into night riding last winter when I discovered I was pregnant and started throwing up for Britain. Decent lights and winter boots, and the trails are all yours, fab.....
