Darwen Tour
Easy off-road route?

Hi, does anyone have a favourite ride at Darwen Tower?  I'm meeting a friend there next week (as a change from Rivington), and we're looking for a fairly easy off-road route.  I'd like to include the reservoirs at Roddlesworth, and also go up to the Tower

Many thanks!

No idea, I don't know the area well at all.  But I ride at Rivington a lot and would like to get to know the area round Darwen tower better.  I rode up to the tower from rivington the other week.  Where are you planning on riding from?

We did a really good linear ride last December from Rivington, round Winter Hill to Belmont village, then up towards Delph reservoir to pick up the Witton Weavers Way to Roddlesworth reservoirs, and Abbey village. It was cold enough for the muddy tracks on WWW to be frozen solid. And the thermos of mushroom risotto with fennel confit, eaten in Belmont churchyard, was delicious (thank you, Mr Sainsbury)

I'd like to ride through the woods again, and have a look at the remains of Hollinshead Hall, before going up to the Tower. We'll probably park at Abbey village or Tockholes

I've ridden along the WWW a few times, its a nice track - can get muddy but still has a firm base.  I also was on it in december, silding through the ice!

Have a good ride

We had a lovely ride yesterday, on bridleways shown in the West Pennine Moors Bridleway Strategy

http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/environment/countryside/pdf/Bridlewaywp.pdf

(sorry, tried to put in a link, but can't get it to work)

The last couple of pages are maps showing the current and proposed network of bridleways

We were overtaken by a very fast lady, coming down from Darwen Tower. A Shecycles regular, perhaps?

i know a great 15miler or so round there but tis not so easy n involves a few cheeky trails, fun when its bone dry but a bogfest round the hills near brinscall when its wet.  the pram path preservation society have been out up darwen tower in the last few years and have ruined the approach path from the south west, used to be a rollercoaster n now a snoozetrail so ive not been up fer a while.

I've been using that document as well Esme, good way of planning routes.
