Well Treehugger, Julie Grr and I rode together today and hatched a plan for a fab ride next Saturday. Basically the plan is to ride from one side of the Peak District to the other and then get the train back. We are going to set off from New Mills at 10am and have planned an off road route that is about 50km long via Chinley Churn, Roychs Clough, Rushups Edge, Edale, Jaggers Clough, Hope Cross, the Beast (maybe), Bamford, Stangage Causeway then Plantation, Houndkirk and Blacka. It will be pretty tough going and will probably take about 6 hours. Let me know if you fancy joining us. For those on the Sheffield side, Treehugger is planning to get the 9.14 train from Sheffield which gets into New Mills at 10.01. Those on the west side we will get the train back from Sheffield.

Hi guys - just to let you know that I have spoken to Gavin about our route and he definitely reckons that it would be quicker to do Jacobs Ladder rather than Roychs, Rushup etc. I think he is right and am also thinking that the Beast would be the best option too - it is certainly the most direct. We can finalise next weekend before he head out if you like.

Are you still bringing the hard tail if doing the beast, Ros????

Hoping to be there, sounds like my kind of ride!  I'll be on my geared bike.

hey excellent - see you sat., you crazy person!

fine with me Ros, not been over Jacobs for a while.  Trio, be good to see you.

Hey TH, I think I will bring the stumpy. Partly because of Jacobs and the Beast (always like to give them a good go) but also for comfort on a long ride.

ok seems like a good plan then. going to have a bit of work done on that shifter, and seat post.

the fish is tempted to come as well but we'll see nearer the day

  rainy and cold for saturday.

Oh no, thats not good. Lets keep an eye on the weather forecast then and maybe review the plan on friday night. I am still keen to do it if at all possible, only really heavy rain and gales would put me off.

Metcheck reckons sunshine and showers:   http://www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/dayforecast.asp?zipcode=sk22&day=4

I've done a similar route a couple of times: Chinley, Roych, Rushup, Hollins Cross, Edale, Jaggers Clough, The Beast, Lockerbrook, Fairholmes (the cafe!), over Whinstone Lee Tor then various options over to Grindleford way.  Did it once going via Chinley, Chapel and Cavedale too.  They've always been long days out!  Great rides though, enjoy!

are you Crazy Legs James? How are you after Mayhem, I heard you were injured.....Ta for the pointers on the route...we were thinking of that way to begin with (via Hollins Cross), but heard that over Jacobs Ladder would be quicker, but I would imagine that we won't be riding most of the ascent so it could be slower.  What do you reckon?  Which is the better ride?

Hey Julie, how's things?  Yeah, I cracked a rib at Mayhem on one of the night laps, didn't actually reaslise til I woke up next morning!  Can still ride though so it's all OK!

Going via Rushup is longer but more rideable plus you get in an 'extra' descent off Mam Tor or Hollins Cross.  I've never liked climbing Edale Cross from Hayfield or doing Jacobs as a descent but that's just my personal preference.  Anyway, it's your ride, not mine!

mmmh - heavy showers and fifity mile an hour winds! lovely! plenty of hot chocolates then!

Lets try and be optimistic, hopefully it won't be too bad. The metcheck forecast isn't that bad:

Lets believe this one and not the others! Seriously though if the wind is that strong then maybe we shouldn't go over Jacobs, it can be pretty wild up there. I reckon lets just go for it and if it gets too bad then we can always bail out at Hope.

I think Gavin may be joining us by the way, he can't make his mind up as I think he wants to go to Wharncliffe again.

See you at the New Mills Central station at 10.01 then Treehugger.

Trio - not heard from you for a few days. You still joining us? If so are you driving or getting the train over? Prob aim to get to mine for 9.45 if that's ok.

I'm out, been looking at the logistics and I don't think I'll get back in time.  Ali is racing on the track in the evening so would have to have the car back to get there.  I would be in so much trouble if it wasn't back in time.  Shame as the ride sounds fun!

I'll try to get the fish to come out as well then - but i think he wants time to pack and pimp his bike for the alps.

Shame you can't make it Trio. We must plan another long Peak ride sometime soon.
