Hi,
I'm booked a two week holiday with Rocky Mountain Adventures to do their Rockies/Fruita/Moab package. They reckon they get a good number of women on their trips, as I've unpleasant experiences of being one of two women on climbing trips in the past I wouldn't relish drowning in testosterone for two weeks.
If anyone has done this trip or similar I'd be interested to know what you thought.

Hello,

I did the Rocky Mountain trip about 5 years ago. There was about 40/60 women/men. There were no single women there on the trip we did, although a friend went out there as a single female a fortnight before us & had no bother. It was a great trip & we made some life long friends as a result of it. I would say that RM had some internal organisational issues they needed to resolve when we went, but for the price of the trip, & the quality of the trails, and the group of people who were there at the same time - it was fantastic.

Have fun. - when are you going?

It's my hubby's 40th birthday treat, we're going the 5th of August, so I expect to cook at Moab. Did you do the Porcupine Rim? I'm comfortable on purpose built Red Routes, will I be out of my depth?

No I didn’t do Porcupine Rim. If I went again now I would try it – but then I was less confident. You do need to be a pretty confident rider & be having a ‘good’ day to do it. The guides were pretty good at identifying who they felt could/couldn’t do it – I would trust their opinion. I was disappointed t the time, but soon got over it after our day out & hearing the views of the people who did it. They said it was good, although pretty exposed with some big drop-offs towards the end.

We did a trip called ‘Gemini Bridges’ instead – which although sounds rather tame, was actually a fantastic day. We saw some great stuff & had a great day’s riding on good desert/slick-rock trails. I found the main ‘Slick Rock Trail’ pretty daunting to be honest – if I ended back out in Moab I would not rush back to the Slick Rock trail, but would head for things like the Portal Trail & stuff instead.

The biggest problem was the heat (surprise surpise). We were in Moab the last week of August. We would get up around 6ish, head out for 7ish & be finished biking by midday. It was great though as we got to spend time in Moab & local lake, swimming pool etc.

I think they now offer accommodation as well as camping in Moab. We camped – which I would suggest, as the experience is magical.

Fruita was fantastic (probably the highlight for me), as was the local Breck stuff.

Any other info you want –let me know. As I say though, it was a few years ago (2001), so he trip could have changed slightly (although I suspect the heat won’t!

Something also worth remembering is that the Breck weather changes v. quickly. The day we left we had 6 inches of snow!!

Did the trip with them in 2004. Organisation a bit dodgy, especialy when getting us to the airport to come home, we all missed our flight.

Were plenty of women riders but mainly men, although they were not competetive and gave loads of support. They split you into groups a lot of the time according to your skill and fitness level.

The riding was fab though. I would say I am an average rider and coped well with all the trails, did loads for my confidence and skills.

You must do the Porcupine Rim, huge grin factor, but be careful two had to go to hospital!

Slickrock trail is just unbelievable, just trust that your bike will stick to the almost vertical hills and go for it!

If you can do the red routes you can do this no prob.

Enjoy but give them hell if they keep turning up late and make sure they pick you up in plenty of time to catch your flight home.

You will love it, my first biking holiday and hope to have many more after this trip.

Hi Queenie, long time ago now, but how did you get on with your holiday in Colorado. We're thinking of going this year with 'Ride the world' so would love to hear what you thought. We're looking at late June so might not be as hot.. any advice appreciated. Cheers. CJ

I've been although it was a couple of years ago. There were three couples and the rest were guys but I didn't notice an excess of testosterone. As with all holiday companies, I think the quality of guides depends on luck more than anything. I know a guy who guides with them during the summer and he's a decent chap but we've been on a couple of holidays where the guides have been pretty poor. They don't get paid a lot and if you take them proper Cadbury's chocolate they will love you for ever.

Don't be scared by Porc Rim. It's only the last few km that are on the side of the ravine and I walked most of this as it's not the place you want to have an accident. I'm glad I did it though. Best if you get a lift from Moab to the trailhead if possible as they you only have a few km to climb before it is pretty much all downhill.

We stayed in the motel in Moab- the thought of long drop toilets in the height of summer along with no lights and lots of beasties made me opt for home comforts.

I didn't think it was terribly technical. I would have graded it mostly red at worst with occasional black bits that can easily be walked round or down.

Hi CJ,
just replied to your email. I did a write up in the review section.

I'd agree with Underdog's comments.

Check the holiday company has the comercial riding permits required by US law, don't take their word for it ask for proof, the prices on RTW look too cheap to encorporate the cost of permits and insurance.

Hi Queenie
Thanks for the link to write up, sounds really great, and for your info on the permits, will be checking with them today and see what they say. Will let everyone know the outcome for future ref. Cheers
