Busted thumb?

I managed to land on my thumb during a fall back at the Easter weekend. It hurt like hell for about a week afterwards but everyone said it couldn't be broken because I could bend it forwards without any problems. The trouble is I couldn't (and still can't) push with it - so can't shift down my gears with the right hand. It kills if I put any pressure on at all. I've developed a little knack of shifting gear with the side of my hand, but obviously not ideal on a steep technical climb! Has anyone broken a bone in their thumb or fingers? Should I have had it x-rayed? And is it too late to do anything now - or if it is broken will it heal itself? I thought at first it might just be bruised but it's getting on for two months since the fall now.

Your thumbs are very important, You should get it looked at professionally... it may be just ligaments but best to get it looked at... good luck :0)

yes get it looked at - I had a similar injury (not broken, but the joint was forced apart when i landed on it) it has taken nearly a year to heal, and is still not perfect. The doc i saw in switzerland gave me a thumb splint which meant i could still ride - and helped initially with the pain. I have used it now and again since, to rest it when various activities have made it swell...

I know they're not available here in UK but are from a company called Sporlastic.

Thanks Jane & Polly - I will get it checked out & look into the splint idea - it might help me change gear at least if it is supported.

Cheers!
