Hi, I wonder if you can give me some advice?? I came off my bike twelve days ago during a race and landed full whack on my bum! I've displaced the third part of my coccyx - had x-ray. Very painful to sit down and lay on my back - feels like there may be a haematoma on the sacral area. I've been seen by a Sports Injury Dr and he tried to relocate it but will need another go in the near future. He's mentioned injecting the area with a steroid but I'm not sure about that.

I would like to try massage to try to disperse any haematoma and loosen up the muscles around it - hopefully speeding up recovery..??

Feeling very frustrated as not been on my bike since! Plan to try turbo in next few days.

Have you come across many injuries like this and what would your advice be??

Mustn't grumble too much, I guess!?? Must be positive!

I would have suggested either a Chiropractor or Osteopath but if your Sports Doctor can do manipulation then they may be able to do just as much ?

I don't know anything about massage (except that I really need one apparently) so no advice on that although I think there is at least one sports massage person on this forum who may be able to answer you. Making sure the muscles are loose is good but you probably won't heal properly until your coccyx is located in the correct place again, your body will do all sorts of strange things to compensate and minimise pain otherwise.

I have a lot of sympathy with you as I have had/still have sacro Illiac problems (joint locked on both sides and inflamed) that is currently being looked after by a chiropractor. I had two adjustments of the right and one on the left side and they appear to be holding at the minute with the help of some "core work" which I hate (need to do some more as I've neglected it for a bit and can feel it again, grumble grumble).

If no luck with the good doctor then maybe a visit to one of the above structural professionals - will cost though.

Hi Julbags, thanks for info.

Sorry to hear about your problem - sounds like a sports massage would do you good. I also need to do core work and will try to commit to pilates this winter - need to make time.

Hope things soon improve for you:)

Mmmm time, I've also decide to look for a pilates/yoga clas over winter, probably yoga first to get my flexibility back.

Just need to pull my finger out (and find some cash too) to get a massage, there is a highly recommended sports massage/therapy guy attached to the chiro clinic (look after Preston North End football team apparently) but its a bit costly on top of the chiro treatments, when they are spaced further apart I'll probably do it.

Hi Mary, where are you based?

I broke my coccyx about 7 years ago, went over the handle bars and the bike came up behind me and smacked me in the back.

It took a long time to heal I'm afriad, talking months here, with pain killers and anti-inflamatories. Still hurts if I sit on a hard seat for too long. Its such a hard place to sort out as its fused bones rather than flexable joints you can manipulate.

If you live near AA I'm sure she could do something for you. I would let her manipulate my bum bones anyday!

Hi Fluffy, hmm.. now there is a recomendation:-)

Mary, I treat a lot of people with Sacral dysfuntions. It is certainly possible to accelerate healing. Drop me an email if you want more info.

Hi Fluffy and AA. Thanks for e-mails. I live in Jersey, Channel Islands - a bit out of the way. Where are you guys based?? How soon before you were allowed back on the bike Fluffy? That one sounded really painful - bike running into you! Ouch!

Trying to be optomistic! Road rash has healed well anyways. Lots of people worse off than me. Miss being part of it all on the road though:(

I'm between Crewe and Newcastle-under-lyme.

I was actualy in mid air when the bike hit, managed to fly about 4 meters from the ramp that I stupidly tried jump. never did get the chain marks out of the back of my T-shirt. I stick to XC now.

Took about 4-6 months if I remember as I broke my wrist as well. I always use saddles with a channel cut out of the back that mean I dont sit on my coccyx and they work a treat.

Thanks for the replies and advice AA & Fluffy.

I'll look into getting one of those saddles Fluffy. Good you weren't put off by that incident - painful one! We live and learn! :)

good luck mary i broke three vertebrae and ouch it was agony, long term a chiropractor has really helped to keep the other damage to a minimum throroughly recommend it... (no pain no gain)!
