Cracked rib

After an unfortunate incident yesterday morning and 5 hours in A&E, I think I might have a cracked rib. It wasn't xrayed yesterday but I understand that if it is cracked rest is the best option. How long before I can ride again and should I go for a xray?

Sorry to hear about your injury LL. If it is a cracked rib, expect about 6 weeks of discomfort.

Hubby cracked his rib whilst out on a training ride a couple of years ago - he didn't go to A&E but did go to the docs who sent him for an xray. There's no much to do except rest - boring, I know!

Sounds like my experience. :( Personally I'd go for an xray just to put your mind at rest, though I'm surprised they didn't do it at A&E. And you had an extra hour than I did. ;) If it's any help I got good advice over in my 'bruised chest' thread.

I think the doctors at A&E were too concerned about whether there was glass in the cut on my shin which was exposing the bone - which made me feel sick everytime I looked at it.
Well I have to see the doctor next week to have the stitches in my shin taken out - I might ask him about my ribs then. Oh the delights of volterol!!!

Even though the only salvagable items from the bike are the cranks and gears, I reckon a trek 5.2 madone might be on order :-)

ouch!!! I hope you feel better soon. Take it easy and dont try to be a hero! I would ask for an Xray, If nothing else it will put your mind at rest.

They probably wouldn't bother with an x-ray if they think it is likely to be cracked, as long as there are no indications that the lung has been punctured, which they can test without. That was my experience at Xmas - said it was probably cracked, but treatment was rest either way, so not worth exposing me to radiation. 6 weeks of discomfort was about right - I got odd twinges afterwards, but could do most things after 6 weeks.
Good luck with the recovery.

OMG ! LL here's to a very speedy recovery. Dare we ask what happened, sounds quite serious. Take care of yourself. CJ

Thanks for the well wishes - lets just say it was a RTA involving me, a pedestrian and a car :-(

Damm cars, who let them onto our roads?

I'm sure you'll recover in time for SSMM!!!

Sorry to read about your accident l-l and hope you'll be back on a bike very soon. Funny way to go about getting a new bike though!
