Hi everyone , just finding my way round the site and have just spent the afternoon reading very interesting threads. I am a confirmed roadie , love my bike and ride 3-4 times a week. Would love occasional contact with others as i am the only female cyclist on the island and consequently ride alone quite a bit. Unlike you all at home the weather has prevented me riding this afternoon (far too hot) hence the surfing. I only have 30 ish miles of useable road and its mostly hills . Anyway thats me for now, P.S my bike is a Bianchi carbon XL and has shared my bedroom , thank goodness hubby is a roadie too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 Hi Sue
It all sounds a million miles from the UK. I've just got caught in a downpour here, that and a head wind on the way back!
You must be a good in the hills then if that's all you have got...I can't imagine having a whole Island to cycle around...
goes of in a daydream.
Welcome to the forum!

Thanks, cant remember what a cold downpour is like !!!!!! But we have a fierce headwind most days albeit a warm one. The only problem is it never changes direction and is in your face all the way up the longest climb (7 miles). Cycling the whole island is good as everyone (all 900 of us)seem to know each other. As the only female cyclist i tend to be noticed. We have a group of 5 male roadies here too, but they work and i dont !!!!!.

 where are you Sue?

Hi i am on the tiny south atlantic island of Ascension , i will be suprised if you have heard of it. Our nearest land is Africa 1500 miles away or Brazil 1300 miles away in the opposite direction.

Wasn't Ascension something to do with the Falklands war or am I making it up ?
|
 |
You are right , it was a staging post for the british forces on route to the war. Its another 8 hour flight from here to the Falklands.

 |
You are out in the sticks then !! You can tell how old I am if I can remember details like that...
|
 |
yes ,you and me both Its a wonderfull place to live if you enjoy isolation . No good for MTB though as its all volcano and lava flow and razor like klinka. Oh and the occasional prickly pear and you dont want to argue with one of them. Good for road if you dont mind riding the same road everytime.

Hi Sue, I must say, you have a very nice bike there, a very good choice if I do say so myself (I've got one too!). I wish the head winds here were warm, and didn't have rain/sleat/snow/hail stones all mixed in with them, just for fun, it must be so nice. Anyway, I'm not sure I could cope with such repetitive training, or no competition, having said that...with the weather you get I think I could.

Hi Vicky i do love my bike , something interesting also , is that we have only 6 road riders(5 guys and me) on the island and 4 of them ride Bianchi. All the bikes were brought out from either the UK or USA independant of each other , the other two ride Giant and Basso/Casati (thats my hubbie as he has two nice bikes out here). Im sure Bianchi would like that percentage ! Do you have the same bike or another Bianchi, all four of ours are different , but all good road frames. I am sure the repetative riding wont get me down , i have done it for over a year now and still feel very fortunate to be here. Although i do realise this kind of life is not to everyones taste. The weather is a real plus point , 7 degrees below the equater means its hot all year round.

Mine is a Bianchi SL Carbon (thats what it says on the fork!), I was really lucky to get such a good bike actually, my budget was aroudn £800, but a local guy had bought this bike and decided that he didn't actually need it, and wasn't riding it, so I was able to get it second hand for £900, it had only done about 300miles and you couldn't tell it had done that. Anyway, I love it and can't believe that I own a full carbon bianchi race bike! I definately think Bianchi would like the percentage of people who own their bikes where you live. You are lucky there are that many people who enjoy the same kind of thing as you!

whats the surf like, Sue? I'm looking for a honeymoon destination. My partner enjoys surfing and i love cycling.

Hi! Have been to Ascension Island, but only for refueling on the way to Port Stanley. Tis a very nice place, lucky you!!

Aunty EM not a honeymoon destination,no real accomodation fantastic surf that you cannot access because of the rocks and lava flows. No transport , Air access only weekly via RAF plane (unreliable). Its a wonderful place to live ,but it is only a working island , you usually have to be here to work or you dont come, i am here as the hubby is employed here for three or four years. But i have to add with all its faults , like no fresh fruit and veg etc ,i wont want to leave.

I bet you miss these -4 degree mornings in the UK. Brrrr

Not a chance ! Did 30 miles yesterday and nearly melted in the heat, re-hydration can be a problem. Today went diving , and swam with giant green turtles, life dont get any better.

 Just rub it in then!
