i lost weight this year and have lost a lot of speed on the bike and climbing strength.people have said it is because i have lost weight.so i am now trying to gain the weight which is a slow process and conflicts the mindset of society.

consequently when i do gain weight i do feel very uneasy.i am 165cm tall and now 47.2kg.

has anyone else found gaining weight has helped and that once i reach a more healthy weight it will all stabalise?

Not sure in any detail, however your BMI is 17.3. Anything below 18 is classified as underweight, normal is 18-25.

When people of a normal weight lose weight, esp if it is due to not eating, they sometimes break down muscle (protein) if they have not got any more fat to lose. In that case you would find that you lose power.

im no expert but if you loose weight too fast (illness or not eating) then your muscle is what goes first - so this would explain why you have lost strength?

maybe ask at the clinic.

i did some tests with Roehampton uni last year when they were doing a study on women mountain bikers - was there the same time as another girl so could sort of compare how I was going compared to her... she was taller and heavier, and kept going in the VO2max test for quite a bit longer than i did, but we came out with the same rating in the end because I was lighter. She then spanked me in two of the gorrick races, danced merrily off up all the hills...

anyway what i think i am saying is that I would agree that being lighter is not necessarily an advantage on a bike, especially not being as light as you are. I am not much shorter than you and about 5kg heavier.

thanks, more positive responses like that, like i said its an unsettling feeling knowing i should gain weight when most people are desperate to lose it,i think its confidence thing, least as im training so the weight im slowly gaining should be muscle!im also aware its NOT good to lose periods and my bone density is rank,i had some scans and i was in the we're-suitably-worried range

has any more research been done on this matter?any supportive evidence would be great to keep me motivated!

Perhaps it might be worth asking for a one off referral to a dietician who can give you some tips on your diet in order to help you put on weight safely and so you start rebuilding muscle. Seeing as though the docs are concerned enough about your weight to look at your bone density, I'm sure they'd be happy to do that for you.

well funnily enough they just gave me a fistful of facts and figures and told me to try and gain weight but i think their resources are limited ion this area,my diet is good now,so its just a case of plugging away at it!-and doing what is the right thing FOR ME.-and feeling positive about it!

however if anyone knows of anyone that specialises in this field that i could see privately please tell me
