i hurt my neck on sunday just putting some rubbish in the bin! (the rock and roll- ness is amazing!)

since then its been very painful especially on the left hand side muscles of neck down to shoulder. (that big muscle where bodybuilders have massive...) it hurts moving up and down and side to side! only on that side though and not my back.

ive been taking ibuprofen 400mg (not helping much)and using deep heat.
i havent seen the doc/physio etc as decided to wait a week and see if it heals itself.

can you tell me the name of what ive done and what muscles involved and what else i should do to help heal?

Thanks

I think the muscle your referring may be the trapezius muscle which runs up the neck and across the top of the shoulders. I have pretty well developed traps (not body builder proportions though) from climbing, I've pulled them doing various daft things on the climbing wall which is why I know what they are.
Linky thing here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trapezius_muscle.

If I'd done something like that I'd be straight to my chiropractor for him to take a look to make sure I hadn't done anything silly. As it doesn't seem to be getting better I would try to get an appointment with someone to have a look at it. I would suggest physio type person rather than a GP as they often don't have the time to look properly and will just tell you to rest. It depends how long you want to wait to see if it gets better. I have no patience to wait for injuries now helped in part by the fact that I go to a chiro I trust. If he can't fix it them he will suggest someone else (like last time when he ordered me to get a sports massage).

does sound like that muscle.
doesnt hurt as much as it did on sunday but still v painful.
going to leave it still until monday i think then go to docs (have to go to docs before physio so can get work private health)
fingers crossed for speedy recovery so iu can get out when the clocks go foward!
