Hysterectomy

I've currently got an ovarian cyst (13cm) and fibroids - yes is does sound a mess !

I'm off to see the gynae man next week and suspect I may have to have an hysterectomy of some sort. I've done plenty of reading etc

So as part of my questions to ask is I'm planning to ride the London to Paris ride in July 2007, how soon will I be able to get back on my bike to start training.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

they normally say no heavy lifting etc for at least 12 weeks... Make sure if it is planned you are well prepared and informed by the doctors, this can be quite serious abdominal surgery and can take a while to heal, good luck!

Tara: you must explore all your options as a hysterectomy is not to be taken lightly. I had one when I was fairly young (family complete, thank goodness) and there did not appear to be any options ... or I wasn't informed.

I know things have certainly moved on medically speaking but you must look beyond having the actual op. For example, if you need HRT, are you prepared to be on this for potentially a long time? Side effects? Yes, some people do get them ... and I have just learned to put up with them which isn't easy sometimes. Alternatives? Yep, tried those - expensive and didn't work. Scare stories in the newspapers ... and there are plenty of those to worry you.

Sorry but don't mean to sound cynical ... I just wish I had been better informed.

On the plus side, despite having emergency surgery as well, after 8 weeks I was out running again (my sport at that time) and was great to feel so much better.

Feel free to e-mail me but I do wish you good luck. I do think that having a goal like your event will really help.

Many thanks for the replies

'Old Bird' I've taken on your comments and is very similar to advice given by friends.

I'm 44 so the change is beginning to happen - night sweats, weeping etc although this could have been start of the cyst as well.

Oh the joy of being a woman !

In the meantime I'll keep you all updated as this could happen to someone else and if the facts are hear it all helps

Many thanks for the replies

I had hysterectomy last year and it was the best thing ever. I felt so much better afterwards and was exercising gently in the gym four weeks after. Back at work within 9 weeks. Do look after yourself and make sure your stomach is toned prior to your op as it aids recovery.
Up to about 6 weeks you will think you are never going to feel well again and all of a sudden you will start to feel better again.
Be prepared to feel tearful this is quite normal.
Look forward to the new you and let everyone look after you for a while....

Thanks for the replies - the good news is that I'm getting over my op very well - my body certainly tells me when I've done too much.

Unfortunately I've got to have another op to remove further tissues as I have ovarian cancer but after this op I then start chemotherapy and after that I should have the all clear

Training is going to be a little later this year but still a target to aim for as I'm going to be a positive as possible as it's part of the cure !

Have great Xmas everyone

Poor Tara - you have really been through it. Just keep looking at your bike - it will really motivate you.

Good luck with your recovery and your challenge.

Thought I'd drop a line to say I'm in remisson - hair growing back and back on the bike - fitness wise back to square one with an extra 2 1/2 stone to get rid off as well !

thanks for all the good luck messages

HI Tara,

Great news!
Where are you based?

A friend of mine has just been told he is in remission also, he has found his fitness is returning - and the extra weight is disappearing also - hopefully you will find the same-

All the best

Polly

This is so sad.  I was just reading through threads on lunch and was so shocked to read the above.  I wasn't even on SheCycles at this time and so never chatted with Tara but my thoughts are with her family and friends.

I know how horrible it is to lose someone to this disease having lost my mom to breast cancer in 2005.  I keep thinking I am getting over it and then I hear of the waste of another life.  I am sat here in tears!

I was so sorry to hear the news.  Tara sounded such an upbeat person who wanted to enjoy her life.  Having chatted to her on the forum, she came across as an amazing lady and it was so unfortunate that she couldn't do all the things she wanted to do.

So sad , i wasnt on the forum at the time ,but just been reading the thread and am shocked it all happened so quickly, she sounded so upbeat when she mentioned that she had cancer, she made it sound like a minor inconvience not a life threatening illness. Sad too that she never got to do that ride, makes me grateful for every time i get out on the bike .
