Can anyone recommend any first aid courses that cover stuff more geared to outdoor activities rather than general CPR stuff?

There seems to be so many to choose from its difficult to know which ones are worthwhile!

I recently did a REC course (Rescue Emergency Care) and it was specifically geared to outdoors accidents rather than how to tie nice bandages etc (although it does cover some of that as well). It did cover things like CPR but in a typical outdoors setting and emphasised common sense really. There was an amount of role play involved which was fun as well as useful and enlightening (orange bivi bags provide sod all insulation from freezing cold ground - I was a very cold casualty!). I did the two day course and really enjoyed it. The REC certificate is valid for things like SMBLA, mountain leader qualifications etc.

There are various courses run around the country, just google for "REC First Aid" and you'll find some. The first Aid courses at Plas Y Brenin are run under REC so its good.

I'm doing one at Stuart Johnston Mountaineering in Perthshire in a couple of weeks. http://www.climbmts.co.uk/ It was reccomended by a company who run SMBLA training so should be perfect for outdoors and biking stuff. Can let you know how it goes if you want.

Just had a look at that site to get an idea of cost as myself and the SO managed to wangle our first aid course for free. The certificate is only valid for three years, no big deal for me but the SO wants to do SMBLA stuff in the future so its good to know the courses are not too expensive.

Its also a REC course so it will be practical and depending on the instructor a bit of a laugh.

Please don't talk to me about First Aid Courses.

I've just done my Level 2 Cycling Coaching Course - yippeee. I had planned and arranged(booked)to do my Sports First Aid Course two days before the Coaching Course. A week before hand the first aid course was cancelled and i couldn't find another one- still can't and i'm due to start coaching in 10 days time. AAARRRGGGGHHHH

You could try looking on this site you need to register (free) to get the full contact details of providers but there are a number of alternatives in your area.

I think Bangor Hospital do a Mountaineering First Aid course, or at least they did about a hundred years ago when I did my MLTB training.
