Hi there Pootle.... To be honest i the best diet is the one where you just eat (well) good healthy balanced meals and just exercise........ save your money and worries about sins, use the money and all that energy for that new bike and enjoy more rides! thats my view on the whole thing...anyone agree??

for me personally if i cut down on the booze and try to reduce carbs ( bread esp. makes me bloat )i can loose weight quite quickly whilst still eating well. ( meat and roast veg and fish n veg etc just no potatoes, rice etc ) i'm also a fan of homemade soup which is filling and is good for you. i need to just motivate myself to stop being naughty and diet too!

Yes i agree with you there Windygirl. In this nutrition book i've brought, she said if all diets worked then everyone would be thin, they'd work and you wouldn't keep going back on them. It's a matter of learning how to eat. Just eat more protien as it can be used for energy and burns quicker, carbs store if not burned off . Keep away from ready meals, eat pure foods have butter not marg. eat small but often. Make sure you eat a very good breakfast. If you count calories make sure you don't eat less than 1,500 or body will think it's been starved and will store everything you eat. I'm not a big eater and find it hard to get in the cals so i have a food diary which gets boring, but at least i can make sure i'm getting in the write amount.

I'm pretty lucky in that I can eat what I like though I do try and be good, lots of fruit and veg and not too many takeaways! But I could not cut out carbs - I am a carboholic! Especially rice which I simply adore. Balanced out with at least one decent ride at the weekend and a couple of visits to the gym seems to keep on top of it for me

I did weight watchers a couple of years ago and lost 2 stone, so it does work, but you have to be so so strict and motivated! I have managed to keep about two thirds of the weight off, without too much effort, but have since tried to do the diet again to lose that extra half a stone, but failed miserably every time! I have tried every diet under the sun, and most diet pills available, but I am still waiting for that miracle non surgical cure that removes the flab forever..... Becky

Weight Watchers Core plan is excellent. You can eat as much as you want three times a day off a list of unprocessed food. In summary it forces you to eat a healthy well balanced diet. I need the discipline of going to get weighed to make me stick to a healthy diet. So thats why I'm willing to pay and when you get to your (or back to it again ) goal weight you don't need to pay but can keep going.

i go for a healthy diet combined with exercise not for weight reasons (I weigh 99lbs), but for health reasons as both types of diabetes run in my family. My experience with trying to eat healthily is that fruit and vegetables are easiest consumed in smoothies or soups because I'm a very fussy eater, junk food can be consumed but not crazy amounts of it, variety in food is very important, the occassional Chinese/ Indian doesn't ruin all your good eating, fresh food should replace processed food, a good breakfast helps to lay down a foundation for a healthy day of eating, and, of course, drink water when you think you are hungry as sometimes thirst presents itself as hunger. Remember that food should be more about enjoyment and satisfaction, than suffering and control. If you don't know where you are slipping up in your present choice of food, keep a food diary for a week or two and then try to replace your unhealthy choices with healthier options.

The best thing that works for me is a combination of:
lots of water through the day--as others have said, your body is sometimes thirsty when you think you're hungry
green tea instead of coffee or milky regular tea (I find coffee makes me retain water)
unprocessed food (no fast food, no ready meals, etc)
not much fatty food (like sausages, really cheesy stuff, etc but do have some fats like nuts and seeds and I do love buttered toast from time to time! Real butter, not marg, definately)
smaller portions (i.e. one burrito instead of two)
a couple of treats a week rather than a treat every day (treat= chocolate bar, piece of cake, cappuccino, etc)
regular exercise at least 5 days a week for at least 45 minutes.
Eating like this is not that hard, and there's great intrinsic reward when I start to feel better. This pattern usually gets me back to my ideal weight and BMI and I feel great. But I tend to yo-yo and I will feel great for 6-9 months, then I hit Christmas and winter weather and I slide back to a less than ideal weight and so it all starts again... if only I could just be good all year! Its the craving for carbs and mince pies in the winter combined with lower level of exercise that sets me back.
Another thing I noticed is when I went wheat-free for 6 weeks once, I lost weight around my middle mostly--probably bloating caused by so much wheat. Now I try it for a week at a time and I seem to lose that slightly bloated feeling within a few days. I also try to mix my crabs more so I have less wheat. For example, I may have oatmeal for breakfast, jacket potato at lunch and rice in the evening.
I LOVE to eat! Exercise helps me have a bit more freedom to eat what I like, but so does 'conscious' eating. Being aware of what I am eating. I avoid getting worried about my eating though, because that's just no fun!
