Turbo training tyre

It's been many moons since I was last on a bike and I am intending to make a start by using a turbo trainer to increase my fitness before hitting the roads in September (when the smalls return to school)

This is all pretty new to me but having done some research (& saved-up!), I've ordered the CycleOps Fluid2 & I would be grateful if anyone on here could advise me of what sort of tyre I need to kit my MTB with to ensure smooth contact with the fly-wheel?

I would just get a cheap slick tyre?  You can get specific tyres for turbo trainers (I think they are more slick so last longer), but dunno if you would get them to fit a mtb wheel.  I just use normal tyres on mine as I can't be bothered to have multiple wheels or to change the tyre and it works fine (on road bike with road tyres though)

Thanks Claire (cool pics btw) yeah, not thrilled at the prospect of changing tyres too often tbh.

How do you mtb'ers deal with this? I know nothing about this but I think I read somewhere that a semi-slick would double for road & trainer purposes? I'm not planning on going seriously off-road anytime soon.

problem with mtb tyres on the turbo is that they make a lot of noise, and i think they would probably wear out quickly.

Semi slick would be better, and would be fine on towpaths and fireroads outside, particularly if you leave a normal mtb one on the front

or you can get a spare wheel, but obviously this is a bit pricey, and also means two cassettes, and then if you ride one wheel loads more than the other one cassette could get more worn which would be very annoying!

Semi-slick it is then & I'll the leave the front as it is - many thanks for the help
