there's no need for us all to bring a map - so has anyone got a laminated one? only bit i'm uncertain about is which way from beast, to bamford. it miht have to be  a bit of road there.

There's various ways, some of them more cheeky than others but footpaths round that area on a Saturday is probably a bad idea...

Quickest off-road way is to miss out The Beast and go R at Hope Cross along the Roman Road to Aston but I've also done FP's off road all the way from there over to Win Hill and Yorkshire Bridge.

Doing The Beast gives the simple option of A57 or up onto Hagg Farm then R along the ridge to come out at Crookhills Farm.  Longer way is to do Hagg Farm, Lockerbrook descent, Fairholmes, below the dam then up onto Whinstone Lee Tor which is the way I've done it in the past.  Descend to Cutthroat Bridge then road into Bamford (there's a convoluted and partly illegal off-road way in but it's difficult to describe and I haven't done it for ages anyway!)

Have a good ride.

brilliant thanks - they're the ways i've looked at, so i guess we just need to decide - and see how the weather is and how slooowww i am.

Hey there, the reason we suggested the Beast is that it looked like the most direct route. Just need to ride around ladybower after the beast and then cross the dam by Bamford and take a road up to Stanage. Or we also thought about the route via Aston but couldn't see a way to Bamford other than going on the road. Anyway I have got a waterproof map TH so you don't need to bring one. We can discuss en route tomorrow. See you in the morning.

Hey James, hope your ribs are better and you can laugh again, or even cough.  Ta for the advice, will let you know how we get on.  Fingers crossed that all the weather reports are wrong and we'll have lovely dry weather the whole way.

Anyway, Ros and India, poss. Gav, see you tomorrow whatever the weather...

Thanks for a great ride everyone, I'm just home and downloading everything!  I must take more pictures though, the only picture I took is on a road!

well, we had rain, it looked like it was going to be crap, but it was a pretty damn good ride, and I've even picked up a bit of a tan

we seemed to get up Jacobs really quickly, so wasn't such a bad choice afterall.  I think I was remembering one of the other times I've gone over Jacobs the other way round - not such a nice push!!

Sorry we couldn't make the burgers India, hope you enjoyed them anyway.  I was pretty tired as soon as I got on the train, so probably a good job I left when I did.

Hope to see you all again soon have a relaxing sunday.

It was a great ride guys, really enjoyed it. I really fancy doing more long routes like that. Promise not to lose you next time Julie/ TH! So who is up for our next adventure then - Snowdon?

The weather on Saturday morning was awful - I thought any ride would be horrendous but it picked up quite nicely later on, I got out on the road bike in the afternoon once the Tour had finished.

It occurred to me there's another way from The Beast over to Bamford, the easiet way of all is to fork off R near the bottom of The Beast and go along the scenic track on the S side of Ladybower, brings you out right on the dam crossing at Yorkshire Bridge!  Can't believe I forgot about that one!

Sounds like a great ride.

That's the way we went James, definitely the easiest out of the options discussed, although that road climb up to Stanage was a bit of a killer. We set off in the pouring rain and I know I was questionning what we were doing but by the time we got up Jacobs it had cleared up and the rest of the ride was fine. Even had to put sun tan lotion on!

thanks julie and gav for fettling my bike.
