Hi,

I've not been out much lately, had a knee op in Feb, just trying to get fitness levels back up.  Last ride I had was a flatty round Church Fenton, but I have ridden from Golden Acre/Adel into Otley before.  I've done a few weekend rides in Lakes/Dales/Tan Hill.  Would be good to try some new routes out (not very good with maps!).  Where do you normally ride?

I think the Peaks might be a little far for midweek, but would be up for meeting on a weekend.  By the way, is it road or mountain bikes you have? I ride a road bike at the moment.

Hi nicola,

You may remember me, we met & had a ride sometime ago in Otley. I've just discovered that there's a women's cycling group that meets every 2 weeks around Leeds and cycles for up to 20 miles in the evenings,

the next meet is tomorrow, Wed. 16th April at East Kewsick, starting at 7 pm. I intend to be there so maybe you're interested?

re weekend rides in the Peak - its mountain bike.

Well, I'm now both - but essentially I'm a mountain biker. Just bought a road bike, and only done 2 small rides. Would be deffo up for some company for road rides.

What's that womens cycling group like?(what's it called?)   I find the thought of riding in one of those groups very scarey. I hear scarey stories about "protocol". ..I think I would want to rebel!!

Generally "protocol" for riding in groups is to ensure safety of those in the group and other road users it is not there to impose nasty silly rules etc.  (In the past I heard it was usual to "fine" any rider who passed the captain of the ride, those days are long gone)

The sort of protocol I come across in group riding;

Those in front warning following riders of hazards ie parked car, potholes, and stopping for red lights.

If you have a problem that you need to stop it is also customary to call a warning of stopping, that way the person behind does not ride into your wheel and everyone else knows you have stopped and subsequently do not ride off leaving you behind and lost.

Those at the back warning those in front of an overtaking vehicle, so they are aware of what is going on on the road around them.

It is not pleasant to ride into a parked car or pothole due to no warning and it is useful to know that those in front are stopping/slowing down because of a junction/red light.

You can rebel if you like from these protocols when in a group, but at your peril

Hi, know what you mean riding in a group scares me too!!

Not been out for a couple of weeks (getting withdrawal symptoms!!).  If you fancy some company on a road ride I would be up for it.

Wouldn't mind knowing the name of the womens cycling club and where they meet?
