Hi,

I am 18 and i ride on country roads as well as off-road and i need a new bike! Im currently using a mens saracen that got handed down....its OK but i think its a bit too big and now i know i have stopped growing i would like to get my own bike that will last me a long time. Im 5ft 9in and would prefer a mountain bike as thats what i am used to using, i only really want front suspension though.

Basically i want to know any recommendations of any specific models or prefered makes. I can't afford a mega expensive one.....working with a budget between 400-800. Dont mind looking at last years models either. I am also on the heavier side and wondered if that affects what i should buy?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

 Kate

Hi Kate

With the budget you have you'll get a pretty decent hardtail mountain bike (front suspension only). If you'll also be using the bike on country roads maybe look for front forks that lock out, it's easier to ride on tarmac if the front of the bike isn't bobbing about.

Where in the country do you live? Somebody local to you on here might be able to suggest a good bike shop near you. Places like Evans are quite good for being able to compare a lot of bikes, and get an idea of what you get for your money. Any of the big brands will be a good bet for the first bikes to be looking at Specialized, Trek, Kona, Giant, Marin among others. Be sure to look at the womens specific models too as these might fit you better. A good shop will be able to advise you on fit.

Hope that helps a bit!

Hi Kate

I'm a complete non-expert and have only been riding mountain bikes for a short time. I'm on the heavier side too and haven't really found that to be an issue when riding my bike.

I have a Kona Firemountain 16 inch and I really like it (her! She's called Hilda). I got a men's frame because I have short legs and a long body so womens specific frames were no good for me at all.

However, what's good for me won't necessarily be good for you, not least because I'm 3 inches shorter than you and have stumpy legs. I tried out pretty much every bike in my budget at several bike shops until I found one that found right. I know Evans has some demo days coming up soon which would give you a chance to try out various bikes to see what's a good fit if any of them are close to you .

Thanks for your replies!

I have an evans fairly close to me....i live in dorking in surrey....so i shall check that out. I've been having a look on the internet and quite like the look of some of the specialized and marins! Looking forward to the summer and a bit less mud....i dropped my ear phones in a puddle today.

 thanks again for you advice!
