Hello, having just bought my first road bike to try and reverse the overweight under fit equation and was wondering what people considered a good starting point for training. I live with a cycling addict who will ride 100+ miles on a weekend and has a very different idea of what a hill is to me so he is no help. I am just not sure how much I should be doing to start with, I tend to try to do too much and then give up after a few days or don't do enough (as I am quite lazy). I would love to ride with someone but at the moment really dont feel fit enough! Does anyone have any suggestions or training plans I could work towards? Thank you : )

Hi Jenny You need to set yourself realistic goals. Start of getting use to the feel of the bike. Plan yourself a route say 10miles then as you start to feel fitter increase the miles or increase your speed. Most of all have fun an enjoy.

Thanks for that! I have planned a couple of local routes of around that distance and will try them out at the weekend, my only problem is i live in the pennines and it is all down hill out and uphill home. I am thinking of moving to Nolfolk

Well its going to be nice wk/end so just enjoy. Yes i know about Hills as i'm in Leeds, but often head out that way but when on MTBike. Your'd get board in Norfolk as no hills, stay where you are you'll get fitter .

Hills are great, you have an excuse for going slow! Where in the pennines are you?

I live just outside of Halifax. I am going to give it a bash this weekend , where abouts do you MTBike as I do ride off road as well? I am trying to get fitter to enjoy my off road riding more.

I'm in Bolton, ride both on and off road.

Ah the other side of the pennines! I dont think I would keep up with you, I have seen your posts and you sound as fit as a flea.

There is a difference between fit and fast though. Hills are great for getting you fit!

Jenny I live near Mirfield so I'm happy to go for a ride with you. Try going from Halifax to Sowerby Bridge, it's not so hilly and you can have a coffee when you get there as an incentive. I work shifts but we could fit in a ride on my rest days or before I do a late / night shift.

Thanks for all of the encouragement, do you have an e-mail address Dude and I will have a practise run with my fella and then I will drop you an e-mail
