Hi.  Would love some advice on buying a mountain that can also be used as a touring bike.  Thought I would stick some panniers on and change the tyres.  Maybe the wheels to?  Wanted hard tail with maybe lock out front suspension. Think I will go for V brakes and discs might complicate things while travelling (basically I can fix v brakes!)  I am not too hard on the bike while mtb'ing but want something that won't snap on a small drop off.  As an example it needs to cope with likes of Marin and Llandegla black.  Budget is around £400.  Am I asking too much?  Thanks. Sam x

dunno about touring, but there are a lot of h/tails with v brakes for £400, Guess you're looking more for 100mm fork rather than 80mm for the likes of llandegla black route type....

anyway, what happened to you after the Llndegla ride in Jan? You disappeared...?

I have used my Specialized Rockhopper for both MTB and more recently its my touring and commuting bike - but it's quite heavy with panniers/tent etc, and quite slow - or maybe it's me that's slow!!!  And disc brake pads are dead easy to replace.
