We are setting up a new womens team in the East Midlands for 2009. We seek interest from riders aged 16 -24 whose key focus is road. Support will be given in the form of bikes, clothing, expenses, team service vehicles, coaching and media training. Anyone who is interested can contact via email - lauren Peck on lauren.venture@btconnect.com

This sounds interesting. It appears a lot of support will be given to get women riders into racing. However as many of us are over 24 I'm wondering if this is ageist?! After all wasn't there a woman competing in the time trial in Bejing who was 49?

Hiya, its not meant to be ageist, as an organisation we deliver lifeskills, education and vocational programmes for young people aged 14 - mid 20's who are without social of accademic success. As many of our programmes are sporting based (including one called Cycling4Life) we were looking to associate our team with our student age group and give confidence that if others of the same age can apply themselves then such possibility could apply to them. Jeannie Longo is amazing. Also as a rider since just after learning to walk and still loving it, i passionately support the ageless-ness of our sport. one of the aims of this team will be to develop the riders with support both material and otherwise to build a group that can compete whilst also representing the ethos and passion to support young people at most risk. We would be delighted to hear from anyone interested who, whilst maybe being 'older' could still meet this challenge?

Jeannie Longo the world's all time best female cyclist (at present can see Nicole Cooke surpassing her at some point!!).

I am 27 and feeling old after seeing that! (but am faster on my bike than when I was 24)
 Shame im too old too
I'm too old as well I'm a lot faster on a bike than when I was 24, seeing as I didn't really ride then!
Me too, didn't start till I was 27 (unless you count pottering around with stabilisers when I was a babby!)
Oh well...we'll just have to form a 27 yearolds and above team instead...
Preferably one with mtb option too....
What am shame I'm now 29 however I was a lot quicker when I was 16! Started cycling at 13 my I remember the days of all day riding, squashed sandwiches and getting as muddy as possible! Oh and no commitments to stop me from riding .. like work and boyfriends!!
I'm 28 now having been riding for around 3 years and getting quicker, I'd love to find a local team with more women that actually race.. I got PB's this year in my 10 mile time trial (22:24) and my 25 mile time trial (58:45) and just tried a road race for the first time ever. There doesn't seem to be much support around for those us that started a little later in life - I wish I'd found cycling sooner

Where in the east midlands is it based?

Hi Darell I'm afraid I'm well past the age limit! However I was just wondering if you still had the track bikes from Nottingham Track school that you were using a couple or so years ago - I am hoping to get a few young riders up to the track at Forest Town at sometime, but at the moment lack of suitable bikes is holding us back. Would it be possible to use some of them?
Hi, the bikes at Forest Town, we were storing them in the facility we use for our Cycling4life education programme. Stash had something to do with them when he was running the track stuff at Forest Town, they were then stored elsewhere, i will ask around and see if I can locate them.

Thanks, It would be great to see if we could get them back into use again - especially with the current interest in track cycling since the olympics.
