Hi

Have just joined and feeling my way round site.  I live on the Isle of Arran, Scotland so am looking for advice on Cyclng on the mainland in North Ayrshire - road cycling.  Can anyone supply a taffic free route between Ardrossan and Glaasgow.

Hi

How about the A77?  It's now been replaced by the new M77 so, although it's still open to traffic there's hardly any and it has a really wide cycle lane so there's always loads of road bikers there.  Once you get into the outskirts of Glasgow it's going to be busy, there's not really any escape from that.  Maybe if you head towards pollock park you can then follow the cycle path to the river (at Glasgow science centre) and then into the city centre.

I know you can get from Ardrossan to Kilwinning along paths and there's a sustrans route that goes from Kilwinning to Glasgow / Balloch, i think, at least I've seen the signs for it.  Most of North Ayrshire seems fairly traffic free to me (all those wee tiny white roads) so I think you'll be fine, there's gorgeous views if you go up some of the hills near the coast (between Prestwick and Kilmarnock).    The road surface at the south of Glasgow is much more friendly than if you go out North.

The ride south from Ayr is also quite challenging, if you go out by Blairquan/ Straiton.  I don't think we saw any cars at all there.

Have fun exploring!  I'm based in Glasgow and out most weekends if you're ever looking for someone to ride with.

Thanks Elizabeth.  I'll get the map out and look at the A77. The sustrans route from Kilwinning to Glasgow sounds promising.  Just need to pluck up the courage and do it.  Feel like a hamster going round and round the island even although it is beautiful.   Not used to cycling in heavy traffic so should really go on a traffic course. Thanks again
