I know the nights are getting lighter and i should have got some lights months ago but i haven't been able to get motivated enough to go out on a night. But, now i want some so that when i do go out early evening i dont get caught out on the way home when it's getting dark.

Not looking to spend a fortune, probably £30 max and not looking for anything really big and bulky.

Any suggestions? I've had a look around but there's just 100's to choose from. Are LED's better than normal? or what type should i look for?

Are you after battery or rechargable lights?

SJSC have some recharable cateye and smart lights in stock for about 25-50pounds. The smart ones are end of stock - not sure about parts though if they go wrong - but hey at 30quid you could afford to replace them next year.

For commuting I just use a cateye el300 led light - good beam, lasts a long time but not very good side visibility (ie being seen from the side) - as a "get out of trouble" light it isn't bad but quite big and bulky. The other one that is pretty good and small enough to put in your back pocket in case of emergency, is the cateye comapct opticube - the SO always has one in his rucsack - unlike me - mine have to be attached to the bike so that I don't forget them in the morning.

I suppose I really should get my dynamo hub working again - that was great - no need to worry about not having lights!!!

I use a Cateye Octicube for exactly the things that you seem to want a bike light for. It is £30, it has a flashing or permentantly on setting and lasts a ridiculously long time (I can't remember how long, but long enough for you to not really have to think about it). It is really bright, a lot brighter than I thought it would be when I got it. I just use it on my road bike when I know that it is going to be getting dark by the time I get home, but I am confident that if it ever for really dark then I would be visible to car drivers using it.
Its also quite light, compared to a lot of bike lights out there, it just clips on and off so is easy to use. I'd reccommend it.

wmw758- any idea what the model number of that light is? i've just ahd a look and there's a quite a few with that octicube lens (think its the lens) it sounds exactly what i'm after!

i got a little light thingy from halfords that is tiny rubber LED light, have clipped it to back of helmet, ony a fiver...good as an extra..
