Thanks Trio, know about motivation over the years.  Working shifts meant days off in the week to go out but did not have anyone to cycle with.  Have made all the mistakes over the years;

Going out aimlessly with no plan.

Having good intentions but get sidetracked; oh it looks like it might rain, there's something on the radio to listen to, and, more recently, too long playing t'internet.

Tis easier these days cos there are so many younger retired cyclists and they are out most days of the week, so most days there is a cafe stop somewhere in the NW where I know I can hook up with some cyclists if I want some company even if I ride there and back alone.

More motivational tips than I can shake a stick at...

A pootle round the long mynd sounds great - alas it is a slight slog up onto the top, but once up high, the views are great...the mist, the sheep, the elite gliding club etc. etc.

I dont class the ride up the hill as a slog, more like if walking with bike its either cross traning or taking ones bike out for a walk .

Lovers having sex beside the road......  Seen it all on the Long Mynd!

I once watched as an elderly lady struggled up to the highest point on her mobility scooter - question is, did she come all the way up from Stretton?

Blimey..this Long Mynd is beginning to sound decidedly exotic now! My initial impression from a "pootle along the Long Mynd" was all rather lovely (bluebells etc.) Now I don't know what to think? It seems its all going off down there.

BTW does a 1:5 climb just to access the Mynd mean that I have a 1 in 5 chance of making it to the top with both lungs and feeling in both legs...? I just like to play the odds you see

Hiya

I'd be up for the Mynd.  Not been this year as yet.

Just come back from N Wales, week's cycling with the OH.  I have thighs of steel!!

Warning blatant employee plug coming up

If your looking for Bluebells you could try looking for woods on the Woodland Trusts website www.woodlandtrust.org.uk there is a discover our blubells page on there at the moment.  Although the woods are open to the public they are not really bike friendly and MTBing is not really encouraged at the majority of them, I'm working on it though!

All WT woods are mapped on the Sustrans website as well which has a much better mapping system than ours.

While your out there riding and enjoying the countryside you could if you are interested look for any big old gnarly trees and record them for our Ancient Tree Hunt or you could just look at the map of already recorded trees and use them as motivation for going for a ride.

Then finally we also run the Natures Calendar (Spring and Autumnwatch) where you can record various seasonal happenings in your area, there is also loads of free stuff mostly aimed at children but really good fun and quite addictive for adults check out the Ladybird Pacman http://www.naturedetectives.org.uk/play/games/spotted.htm

mynd sounds good, can we try and plan for maybe july time...
Show/hide user stats
No Bluebells on top of the Mynd but there might be in the wooded valleys below, too open and exposed on top.

July is busy, but sure we can fit in a ride

Show/hide user stats
I can't unforunately, unless I book a day off
